When can I return to exercise after Breast Augmentation surgery?

If an implant is placed under the fascia (the fibrous covering of the muscle), generally some exercise can start two weeks after surgery. Usually that means a bit of cardio such as static bike or going for a walk. Between 2 and 6 weeks, we encourage patients to start on isolated limb weights and core training. It is three months post-surgery that you can start chest and back training, including bootcamp and F45.

If an implant is placed behind the muscle, all exercise needs to be avoided for 6 weeks, and even three months after surgery only light chest weights should be used.

We sometimes see late issues with patients who have started doing heavy chest weights. Over extending the chest can produce microtears in the scar that surrounds the implant (the capsule), and in some patients their bodies respond by putting down thick scar to produce a capsular contraction.

Having said that, our general philosophy is to get patients back to exercise as soon as possible for both their physical and mental wellbeing. As always, if in doubt, just ring and ask!

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
