On the day of admission for your breast reduction, I will draw on your breasts and I’ll do so whilst you’re standing as most patients with bigger breasts find that the shape changes radically when they lie down.
All of my breast reductions take place in an accredited hospital (St John of God or Beleura Private) under general anaesthetic. A breast reduction operation takes about 90 minutes and patients wake up with simple dressings on – no drainage tubes or bindings. I keep all of our patients in overnight and review them the following morning, when your dressings will be removed and replaced with simple paper tapes.
You go home without a bra and most patients describe the level of pain as mild with a feeling of tightness. We provide a range of painkillers and an antibiotic for one week. We give you our 24/7 emergency contact number for our on-call nurse should you have any concerns.
We check your wounds a week after surgery. All the sutures are dissolving and the paper tapes tend to fall off after about ten days or when we remove them after two weeks.
Most people return to driving at around three weeks and start exercising between four and six weeks post surgery.
We recommend waiting at least three months before spending money on expensive underwear, as breast size and shape change during that time.
