Dr Google

Some people might think I have been really negative about abdominoplasty over the last few days. I’m not, I’m just negative about some of the things that can happen if folks don’t stick to the rules and being the honest kind of chap that I am, I think it only fair that they are pointed out.

This is a team effort, and both of us need to do our bit. Most people who get with the programme get great results and are happy, but those who think that a combination of listening to their best-mates-girlfriend’s-sister-who-knows-someone-who-has-had-an-abdominoplasty and Dr Google, can be a recipe for disaster. We have a 24/7 on call service to save you from yourself. Please use it!

We have a similar problem with Dr Google when it comes to implant sizes. I might suggest an implant size, which on first inspection sounds massive and gives you nightmares about having huge breasts which will attract the wrong sort of attention at parent teacher night. Not so! Over the last ten years, we have asked every single patient whether they are happy with their breast size and what they would change. Along with my friend Jamie, a really clever statistician in Sydney, we have correlated this information with factors like body mass index, breast width and even handedness to try and work out how people respond to different sized implants. The basic facts are these; unless you are underweight, the chances are you will be happy with the implant I suggest or wish you had listened, and picked a bigger one. I published this paper in 2014, and last year it was rated as one of the three best papers on breast implant sizing in the world. I reckon that trumps what your mate’s-sister’s-girlfriend says. And Dr Google too.

Ultimately your surgeon has a vested interest in getting it right for you. So I am responsible for what I do. No one else has this responsibility so why listen to them?

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
