Some women find that they are unhappy with the shape of their nipples or the size of their areolas, the dark ring around the nipple. Together, this area is known as the nipple-areolar complex or NAC, which can become enlarged as a result of having children or just from breast development at puberty.
Tim published a study in 1999 which examined what was a “normal” range of sizes of areola diameters in women in the UK. On the basis of his results, he is able to offer patients a reduction of areola diameter more in keeping with the size of their breast. In addition it is possible to reduce the projection of the nipple (how high it is).
This surgery is usually performed under a general anaesthetic (asleep) in hospital as a day case. Recovery varies depending on the size of the reduction, but generally patients can return to work with a week, and back to full exercise within 6 weeks.
